Studebaker made some fine engines, but when you want nice power and parts availability, nothing beats a Ford 5.0. This fuel-injected V8 looks great in the engine bay with its unmistakable upper intake, and there’s even an aluminum radiator w/electric fan to keep this more modern powerplant running cool. The full package even gives a nice sound out of the dual exhaust that tells the world about its power without being too boisterous. Plus, the four-speed automatic transmission with highway-friendly overdrive also came over from the donor car a smooth-shifting Lincoln. This easy cruising attitude is furthered by the suspension. It’s actually riding on a Chevy S10 chassis, which means you get great driving features that weren’t in a ’49 Studebaker like an independent front suspension, power steering, and front disc brakes.
