Although they didn’t know it at the time, Ford designers created an all-time classic by combining the passenger car nose with the all-business pickup truck cab and bed. The builders of this ’41 smartly exercised some restraint on the exterior, electing not to shave, chop, or smooth any of the original design, leaving all of the awesome factory lines and a lot of the beautiful chrome trim intact. After all, those elements are what made us fall in love with these trucks in the first place, so why mess with a great thing? Of course, with elegant Black paint on its flanks, you know they had to sweat the small stuff, because this truck is an eyeball magnet. Black paint shows everything so you can’t make any mistakes in the prep work, and although the finish isn’t perfect, this strong driver-quality rig needs no excuses. As a result of all that hard work at the body shop, the fit and finish are great, with doors that close without being slammed, a hood that seals up smoothly and curvaceous fenders that reflect light without distortion. The trim that runs down the center of the nose and middle of the grille is brightly chromed to stand out against the black paint and we have to admit that we really like the simplicity of the running boards without their usual rubber coverings. Custom white pinstripe work encircles the cab, provides great contrast and looks great as a breakpoint for the dark finish. A beautifully crafted oak wood bed with stainless rub strips is pickup truck 101, and dig the old-school functional tailgate that allows easy access out back.
The black-and-white leather-lined interior is definitely a no-compromises way to enjoy your vintage Ford. The neatly upholstered, modern bucket seats looks sporty with pleated inserts, and the matching door panels, wood-rimmed Grant steering wheel, and elegant white-faced VDO digital/analog gauges installed in a custom bezel in the dash are all blend seamlessly into the overall look. As a high-end hotrod, the top-of-the-line amenities are in place, from the R134a A/C system, the tall Lokar shifter that looks like a vintage stick shift, to the custom center console that splits the buckets and houses power window switches, cup holders, and a vintage AM/FM radio. Other options include a tilt wheel, seatbelts, and an auxiliary 3rd brake light mounted on the rear window. High-end black carpets and custom-tailored headliner enhance the upscale look and feel of the cab, and it would be easy to spend a weekend in here cruising around the country in first-class comfort. It’s truly a special place to be.
Mechanically, this Ford doesn’t necessarily break any new ground but that’s not really the point. For reliability and performance, you just can’t beat a small block Chevy, and the 355 V8 has only registered 4,126 miles since it was nestled inside the snug engine bay. Topped with a Weber 4-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock Performer intake, it breathes easy through that super-cool Cadillac-style air cleaner accented with cool pinstripe work. There’s Chevy orange enamel on the block itself, and with dress-up pieces like black finned valve covers and a chromed alternator, the motor really pops out from the black engine bay. A big radiator keeps it cool, and stock exhaust manifolds feed a custom H-pipe dual exhaust system with glasspack-style mufflers that sound fantastic. The body sits atop a swapped-in S-10 frame, so you get a lively modern front clip, heavy-duty 10-bolt rear end, along with power steering and power front disc brakes that all vastly improve the truck’s road manners. Rebuilt just 500 miles ago, the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission was augmented with a 2400 stall, so it’ll still work like a powerful pickup truck and a cruiser as well. Rally wheel were painted deep red and accented with Baby Moon center caps and beauty rings, and the custom look is enhanced by staggered 215/60/15 front and 225/70/15 rear blackwall radials.
